Trends – To Follow or Not

If you were to search window color trends you’d get countless results. However, just because something is trending doesn’t mean you necessarily want or need it on your home. Especially something like new windows that you expect to last 20 or more years. So, unless you are building a modern or trendy looking home, you may want to avoid following window trends that have to do with color.

Understand Your Color Pallet

If you’re just replacing your windows, look at the colors on your home. Are they earthy? Bright and bold? Soft and muted? Whatever your current, or future if you’re remodeling the entire exterior, overall color pallet is, you should select window colors that complement that pallet.

Style & Color Work Together

To help your home stand out from the rest in the neighborhood you want to use both style and color in your exterior remodel. Here are a few suggestions:

  • When replacing siding, consider contrasting styles, colors, or both. This not only creates visual interest in your home’s exterior, but modernizes it.
  • Need a new roof? Look at some of the architectural color blend shingles, especially if your home is one solid color siding or brick. A color blend shingle adds subtle color while an architectural shingle adds dimension to the roof.
  • New windows come in many colors. However, the style of the window as well as the grids or grilles can make a difference in how your home looks. A single or double hung window with a 6/6 grille pattern is common in older homes. If you want a fresh look, but still want a double hung window, the prairie grille can give your home a different look. Of course, changing the window style to a casement window with no grid is an even bigger change.
  • Entry doors can help your home stand out. Adding windows to the door or as sidelights creates a focal point. Color, however, makes the biggest impact when it comes to your entry door.

However, be careful not to end up with a busy exterior. For example, if you’re planning on using two siding styles and colors, a color blend shingle may not be the best option as your home could end up with too much going on and no focal point. On the other hand, if you’re using two styles of siding of the same color, a color blend roof may be the perfect touch. Window colors should complement the siding and the home’s overall look.
