If you’re looking for new windows for your home, you’re probably looking for something that is energy efficient. You may be familiar with the ENERGY STAR® ratings or have even seen an advertisement for ENERGY STAR windows. Many, if not most, windows sold today have the ENERGY STAR rating. However, it’s important that you, as a consumer, understands what goes into that rating and, understanding terms like U-factor and R-value before buying your new windows.
What is U-Factor?
Sometimes referred to as U-value, the U-factor speaks to how fast heat moves through a through the window. In testing for U-factor, heat transference, reflected heat, and airflow are all measuered. When looking at the National Fenestration Ratings Council (NFRC) window sticker, you should look for a low number. Ideally, in our region, you want a number lower than or equal to 0.25.
What is R-Value?
R-Value is a more readily understood term for most people because it defines a material’s resistance to heat flow. Most people are familiar with the term R-value from insulation in their attic and walls. However, it does also apply to your windows as you want a window that keeps the heat in your home in the winter and out of your home in the summer. When looking at windows, look for an R-value greater than R-5. However ,the R-value is not on the NFRC rating sticker, they don’t include that in their evaluation.
Which is More Important?
When buying new windows, you want to find a window that has a U-factor that meets the ENERGY STAR® rating for your region. However, you should consider the window’s overall energy efficiency including the Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) and Air Leakage (AL). These can be found on the NFRC window sticker as well. In Indianapolis, you want at least an SHGC that is .40 or below as Indianapolis is in the North-Central region. Air leakage should ideally be less than or equal to 0.3 cfm per square foot.
