modern windowsThe term modern windows can refer to several things. As an Indianapolis window company who has been installing windows since 1955, we’ve seen many good changes in window style, manufacturing, materials, and, of course, energy efficiency. We want to help you understand what makes a modern window and how it can help your home be more comfortable any time of year.

Materials & Construction

Like many things in our homes, the construction and materials used have improved. The same goes for the vinyl used in vinyl windows as well as the construction process. If you have old vinyl windows, chances are that they’re faded and perhaps warped. Although their color has little to do with their energy efficiency and keeping your home comfortable, warped windows do impact energy efficiency. Most quality vinyl windows today are made with welded (rather than screwed together frames) which makes them stronger. Because of this, they’re less likely to fail with regular use. And, most manufacturers have improved the window design to make the frames and sashes more insulative.

Can Window Style Impact Your Home’s Comfort?

Sometimes! Although choosing a different window grid design, such as 6/6 or prairie style, in the same double hung window won’t impact a window’s energy efficiency, choosing a casement window over a double hung window can change your home’s comfort. Of course, if you have 20-year-old casement windows, modern windows of just about any style will improve your home’s comfort and energy efficiency.

Modern Windows Are More Energy Efficient

Modern manufacturing techniques improve window energy efficiency which, of course, impacts your home’s comfort. But, so does better design. Many newer window frames and sashes are designed to increase the window’s overall R-value. And, as you likely know, multiple pane windows and Low-E glass are two other influencing factors to increased energy efficiency of homes with modern windows.
