Entry Doors

Choosing the Right Entry Door for Your Home

The right entry door provides a sense of security and can improve your home’s curb appeal. There are many styles and material options offered by Blair Windows & Doors and pros and cons of each. Although the door’s style comes down to the home’s opening and your personal preference, the material you choose requires a bit more thought. If you’re considering replacing your entry door but are not sure what the best material is for your home, let the experts at Blair Windows & Doors help.

Wood

There’s no denying that a front door made from wood adds an elegant touch to your home. Many people choose wood doors because they can be stained or painted. However, it’s definitely the entry door material that takes the most upkeep. Just like any other wood product, water isn’t its friend so you’ll need to maintain it to help prevent warping. Also, you’ll want to be wary of some companies selling “wood doors”. Not all wood door companies have real hardwood doors. Many are a made with an engineered wood core with wood veneer on the outside which are a great option too, but just know what you’re getting and paying for. Solid wood doors are nearly twice as much as engineered wood core doors, but they last longer.

Fiberglass

Fiberglass is one of the most popular options, especially in Indianapolis. It looks great with little maintenance. Some brands, like Thurma-Tru have a higher R-Value than wood. Their polyurethane foam core makes for a more comfortable entry way. Their thick fiberglass skin resist dents and scratches. And together, their core and thick skin, make them 30% more resistant to kick-ins than most steel doors.

Even with exposure to rain and snow, your fiberglass entry door won’t warp. If you’re looking for options, fiberglass is a great choice. They come in many styles and colors and you can paint them if you change the look of your home.

Steel

Steel is relatively low maintenance and often the most affordable entry door material. It’s also considered relatively secure, especially when compared to aluminum or wood veneer. Many steel doors come pre-finished but can, and should, be repainted to keep them looking great for as long as possible.
