Most homes in the Indianapolis metro area have single hung windows. If your windows open by lifting the bottom sash, that’s what you have. However, there are other window styles you should consider. And, don’t think that you have to have the same window style throughout your home. Sometimes it makes sense for one or two windows to be of a different style.
Double-Hung Windows
Of all the replacement window styles, the double-hung window is the most popular. It looks just like a single hung window, but it functions differently. Instead of only the bottom sash moving, both sashes move. The top sash can lower while the bottom sash also can be raised. Double hung windows offer many advantages including the ability to clean both sashes by tilting them in. Here is more information about their many benefits.
Casement Windows
Casement windows continue to grow in popularity. A casement window opens to one side or the other using a hand crank. However, the window screens are inside the home, which some people do not like. However, they offer great air flow and are easy for most people to open. If you have a window over a sink, built-in bookshelf or something else that makes it hard to open a window up or down, a casement window is a great option. And, like a double hung window, you can clean the inside and outside of the window from inside your home. Casement windows are also among the most energy efficient windows when closed. However, they are also more expensive than single and double-hung windows.
Sliding Windows
In some parts of the country, sliding windows are more common than many other types. However, they’re not very common in Indianapolis. Just like a sliding door, sliding windows slide open. Some models allow both sashes to slide open while others only have one sash that slides. Sliding windows are a great option if you have a window that’s wider than it is tall if you’re looking for maximum air flow.
Other Window Styles
There are many other window styles including:
- Picture
- Transom
- Awning
- Hopper
- Bay
- Box
- Garden
And, of course, custom windows. Many homes have some of these windows, however, they’re not often the primary window throughout the home like the above window styles.
