If you have a lovely backyard, the view that sliding glass doors provide is unmatched by windows or other door types. If you’re considering new doors but aren’t sure how to choose the right ones, here are some tips to help you make the best choice for your home.

The height of your door and the width of the opening you’re looking to fill are the two measurements you’ll need to know before you start looking at sliding glass doors. Even an approximation works because your window and door company will help you with exact measurements when the time comes.
Next, a good understanding of understanding of the options and features in doors and windows today ensures you love your doors and windows long into the future. For example, some sliding glass doors are more energy efficient than others. Have an idea what you’re looking for as far as how much natural light you want to come in. You can compare how much light will come through the doors by comparing the VT or visible transmittance. Finally, look at the area where you’re replacing your door, does the sun hit the door or is it under a roof? This may influence some of the options you choose.
Standard Sliding Glass Door or Bi-Fold Patio Doors
Glass, especially double pane Low-E glass, is heavy. Because of the weight of the glass, depending on the frame material, the size of each glass panel is limited. If your opening is more than eight feet (96”) consider either multiple sliding glass doors or bi-fold patio doors. Bi-fold patio doors can range up to 16 feet depending on the manufacturer. Bi-fold patio doors really connect your outdoor living space and indoor space, however, they do not have screens so they are best used on a screened in porch.
Security
Traditional sliding glass doors (whether both panels slide or just one) are slightly less secure than bi-fold patio doors. We recommend that homeowners who choose a traditional sliding glass door also install additional security like a security bar or anti-lift screws included and installed by your window and door company. Of course, you can also choose laminated glass if break-ins are a concern.
